Getting Your Home Ready for Summer Guests

Getting Your Home Ready for Summer GuestsSummer is a wonderful time to reconnect with extended family who might live across the country or even abroad. And if you’re going to be hosting family in your home, it’s important to make a few home updates prior to their arrival so that they can feel right at home when they get there. Here are a few simple tips to preparing your home for all of your summer guests.

Organize sleeping accommodations

The first step is, of course, to ensure that your home has ample sleeping space for the guests who will be entering your home. Most will rely on a spare bedroom to satisfy this need, and in cases where spare rooms might not be available to you, you can invest in a couch that doubles as a bed or in compact, portable beds. Just be sure if you are opting for one of the latter options to designate an area for your guests that will provide enough privacy.

Create ample privacy

How are the windows in your spare bedroom and hall bathroom? In the living room where your guest will be using the pull-out couch? If they don’t yet offer the kind of privacy that would allow a person to feel at-home and comfortable, now is a great time to consider installing new window treatments such as custom shutters, blinds, or shades. As an added bonus, window treatments will also work to control sunlight in the room where your guest or guests will be sleeping. And if your guests are staying in a higher-traffic area such as your living room, consider getting a portable room divider for your living room space.

Create space for your guests’ things

It’s important when hosting guests to offer them space to unpack their things and stow them away temporarily during their stay. You can do this by maintaining an empty nightstand and dresser in your spare room, for example, or by keeping what is stored in the bathroom that your guests will be using to a minimum.

Keep necessities on hand

It can be difficult to travel with all necessities in tow, including toiletries, cosmetics, and charging cables. Save your guests the trouble of traveling with these types of things by keeping your travel-size soaps and shampoos, disposable razors, spare toothbrushes, and things of that nature in a central location for your guest.

Have some of your guest’s favorite things

If you know that your guest enjoys having a particular food for breakfast or is particularly fond of fresh flowers, try having those things on hand when your guest arrives for an especially warm welcome.
