Window Treatments: Are they Due for a Replacement?

How can you tell if your shutters, drapes, or blinds are due for replacement? A little cleaning can easily spruce up worn-looking window coverings, but in other cases, your window treatments may be damaged beyond repair. Shutters need to be structurally sound in order to work properly, so consider replacing damaged shutters. Here are a few signs that indicate your window treatments are due for replacement.

  • Rusted Shutters

If the hardware, including hinges and tracks, is rusted, then it may be time to replace your plantation shutters. Wooden shutters in high-humidity climates are also more susceptible to warping, so consider applying a protective seal to the hardware and slats. If only a few slats are warped, splintering, or otherwise damaged, then you may be able to replace part instead of all of the window covering.

If your shutters only have cosmetic damage, like paint chipping, then repainting is an easy fix. However, if your shutters have any major structural damage, it’s time to get them replaced.

  • Bent Blinds

Blinds can never be bent back to the way they were, unfortunately. Cheaper plastic blinds are more easily bent than metal blinds, so if you’re replacing your blinds, consider blinds with thicker slats. Thicker slats won’t bend unless you apply a lot of force to them and are ideal for homes with young children.

  • Faded Shades

Your window coverings may get more sunlight than any other fixture in your home. Fabric shades can become faded due to too much sun exposure after many years. Though this is a cosmetic issue, you will probably want new, vibrant window covering to brighten your home. Fabric shades can also be torn or ripped, which is not only unsightly, but also allows sunlight through. Replace irreparably torn shades for a more beautiful and functional look.
