How long has Wasatch Shutter Design been in business?

Wasatch Shutter began in 1996. We understand the value of company stability and know that a product warranty is only as good as the company behind it. Over the years we have worked very hard to build a reputation as an experienced and reliable manufacturing company who does what they say they’ll do, when they say they’ll do it – and who stands behind their products. We plan on being around to serve you, our customer, for many more years to come.

What products are available from Wasatch Shutter Design?

We offer a number of custom interior shutter products lines – Basswood, Basswood & MDF hybrid (MDF used for the louvers), Synthetic (non-wood), Knotty Alder, and Specialty woods. These come in painted, stained, distressed and glazed finishes to match any cabinet finish. We also build shutters for any specialty shape – arches, circles, ovals, slants, door lever cut-outs, sliding glass doors, etc.
In addition to shutters, we also offer a wide variety of blind and shade products from the Hunter Douglas, Alta Window Fashions and Windows West lines. We also have other window covering manufactures we work with, thus being a “one stop shop” for any shutter, blind or shade covering need.

Do your shutters come with a warranty?

Absolutely! Since we are the manufacturer and control the quality of the product and the quality of the installation, we are proud to offer a limited LIFETIME WARRANTY! We offer one of the most comprehensive warranties in the industry. You can have peace of mind knowing your shutters are built to last and we guarantee them.

How much time does it take to receive an estimate?

When you call for an estimate, one of our expert shutter designers will come to your home, discuss your window covering options, show you samples and take measurements of your windows. The appointment can last 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending upon the number of windows in your home. Our goal is to provide the best possible custom solutions for your windows. We offer night and weekend appointments if needed. Schedule an appointment now!

What can you tell me about the type of finish you use to paint and stain your shutters?

This is a very important question and a crucial step in making a superior shutter. A company can utilize the very best components, the best processes to construct, the best installation crew… but if they use an inferior, less expensive paint or stain finishing product, then the end product shutter will leave a lot to be desired.
For years now we have partnered with Sherwin Williams to use product called a Conversion Varnish (for both paint and stain finishes). There are a number of technical reasons why we use this product but being “the cheapest” is not one of them. It is actually one of the costlier finishes on the market; however the performance of this product provides us with an extremely smooth finish which is guaranteed not to yellow or brown with exposure to UV rays.

What is the best material to use for shutters?

We manufacture using three general categories of materials to meet all of our customers’ window situation needs. We use solid hardwoods, solid poly-synthetic materials and an MDF material. It is important to have a design consultant meet with you in your home so they can show you the different options and help you make the best decision for your needs.

What does “MDF” or “HDF” stand for?

Medium Density Fiberboard, or MDF, is a manufactured wood product similar to particleboard. MDF is made out of wood waste fibers glued together with resin, heat and pressure.  MDF is used in various building applications (window casing & baseboard materials). HDF or High Density Fiberboard has very similar characteristics as MDF but is heavier and more dense. Neither MDF, nor HDF are true solid “hard wood” materials and are sometimes referred to as “engineered wood”.  Due to its inherent heavy weight, MDF/HDF has some limitations that should be considered when ordering this product. What does “Synthetic” mean and what are the benefits?

Synthetic means the material is 100% non-wood. Technically the material is a foam based, extruded product, is completely waterproof and does not contract and expand like wood can. This composition makes it quite durable. We use this product mostly in places like above a kitchen sink, next to a master bath tub, or in the garage. Anywhere the shutters may be exposed to extra moisture is a great setting to use our Synthetic shutter. Within the window covering industry you may hear the terms “faux-wood” or “composite” associated with synthetic products. “Faux-wood” primarily pertains to blind products. “Composite” is a term that is loosely used and sometimes may be used to designate a Synthetic product, or it could also be referring to a MDF/HDF product. It is important to specify the exact product you are being quoted. Learn more about synthetic shutters.

Will Synthetic shutters turn yellow?

Synthetic or “faux-wood” products have had their challenges over the years with regards to discoloration. Our Synthetic shutter actually has a painted finish versus just having a colorant mixed into the poly material as the components are formed. This makes the finish much more durable and our Synthetic shutters are guaranteed not to yellow from sun exposure.

How do I decide on what color to paint or stain my shutters?

Over the years we have learned a thing or two about keeping this process as simple as possible. We have 15 standard paint colors and 15 standard stain colors for both stained Basswood and stained Alder wood shutters. Most of our customers are able to select a color from our standard color decks that either match their existing window casing or window sill color, or match other significant colors in their home (i.e. kitchen cabinets). We are also able to create a custom match color to fit your design aesthetic.

What is the price difference between shutters and blinds?

Because of all the variables there is no exact way to answer this question but we usually estimate shutters will be more expensive than 2” horizontal wood blinds. Shutters are considered a permanent install into your home and therefore are an investment with added function, insulation and aesthetic qualities. Shutters are an aspect to your home that can actually raise the value of your home’s appraisal because they convey with the house if you ever move. So, while shutters and blinds are both considered window coverings, they are vastly different in durability, function, look and feel.

Once I place my order how long until my shutters will be installed?

We work very hard to consistently keep our installation dates 3 to 4 weeks from the time we receive your signed contract and 50% deposit. You will receive an installation date/time very early in the process; usually this is scheduled during your appointment with one of our design consultants.

Where can I see Wasatch Shutter Design’s shutters?
