How to Fight Screen Glare

How to Fight Screen GlareWhether you’re in your sweats, loaded up with snacks, and ready for the big game or you’re in front of your computer, working on a big proposal that is sure to get you a promotion; there is nothing that can frustrate your plans like a glare shining back from your screen.

Sun glare happens through out the day and moves across the screen as the hours pass.  This sun glare creates a veiling effect, causing strain as you try to see through the glare to the screen.  Battling sun glare is a frustrating experience that can be a literal headache.  If you have a room or two in your home that has particularly frustrating sun glare, there are a few things you can do to alleviate it.

Put up blackout curtains

This is perhaps a little extreme, unless you’re trying to block out all the light so you can snooze until noon on Sunday, but it will solve the glare problem.  Most of us want to block the glare while still letting light into our homes, so let’s check out some other options.

Plant a tree

Landscaping features, such as trees, provide a natural block from the sun while still letting in the light.  That’s a fantastic long-term solution, but you probably don’t want to wait the years it will take for the tree to mature before you can fully enjoy collegiate football season.

Build an awning

The harshest light streams through at midday.  Adding an awning over the windows that provide the most glare gives visual interest to the outside of your home while permanently blocking the sun’s most glaring rays.

Install shutters

Shutters can be installed on the interior or exterior of you home and opened or closed as needed, to direct the light in the direction you want it.  Shutters are available in a variety of materials and colors to fit a wide range of budgets and styles.

Put up window film

Covering windows that face south and west with heat-control film will help block the direct glare from the sun.  This film is designed to block UV rays while still letting in natural light.  Most of these films are removable and can be put up just during the times of year when the glare is the worst.

Install rolling shades

Window shades give versatility because they are easily raised and lowered, allowing you to adjust them as needed throughout the day.

Move the TV

Okay, we realize that this isn’t an option you’re going to love, but if you’re not in love with any of the glare-controlling methods, it may be your most effective option.  It’s also a good, temporary option while you look at the various types of shades, shutters, and more to decide what will work best for you in your home.
